SJT Carrier Bag Fund Donation

Proudfoot Customers Support Stephen Joseph Theatre Scarborough

Proudfoot customers support Stephen Joseph Theatre Scarborough with donation raised by paying 5p for a Carrier Bag!

The Stephen Joseph Theatre has given thanks to the staff and customers of The Proudfoot Group for their generous donation of £2,500, which will help fund their community and outreach work in the local area.

The funds were raised in Proudfoot stores, solely from the sale of 5p carrier bags to customers. Proudfoot supermarkets have been raising money for local causes in this way since the introduction of the mandatory 5p carrier bag charge and have already donated over £35,000 from the funds raised to charities in the area.

The SJT brings entertainment to thousands of people every year through its produced work, visiting productions, films, live streaming’s, and more. The SJT is known for its commitment to new writing and has been the starting point for many now familiar names.

The SJT also runs an extensive programme of outreach work, encouraging everyone in the community to get creative through a variety of projects and regular classes for all ages and abilities.

Paul Robinson, Artistic Director and Acting CEO at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, said: “It’s always particularly pleasing when a truly local company such as The Proudfoot Group supports us.

“This money will go towards our important community and outreach work, something which we know is close to the hearts of the Proudfoot family and company.”

Valerie Aston, director at The Proudfoot Group, added: “Despite seeing a huge decline in the usage of single use carrier bags in our stores following the introduction of the 5p charge, we are delighted that the funds raised from the remaining carrier bags bought by our customers are able to support some fantastic local causes.”

“It was wonderful to meet with Paul and actor Jun Hwang, who is starring as Timothy Wong in the SJT’s latest production Martha, Josie and The Chinese Elvis, - at the theatre to present them with their cheque and hear of all their future plans.
